Strawberry Hill was named, by its present owner, for the most prominent crop grown on the Lusich Farm in Germantown, NY. For years John Lusich’s large lush strawberry crops attracted produce buyers from as far away as NYC.
Though restored to a point, the Lusich Farm Cottage retains its old simple character. The cottage sits on higher land than the road it enters from, offering privacy without sacrificing views of rolling lawns, fields, and a pond. Shade trees and a quaint old outhouse are also on the property. At the rear of the cottage one can see a horse grazing in its pasture. With a circular driveway to the front there is ample parking for boats or snowmobiles too. On one side of the cottage is a garden of fresh grown vegetables during the late spring and summer months.
Inside the farm cottage there are views from all the windows. The flooring is original wood with new tiles on the floor and tub walls of the full bathroom. The sunny living room invites relaxation. The eat-in kitchen reminds us of summer canning, though it sports a refrigerator with icemaker and water dispenser. Two bedrooms are on the first floor. The third bedroom, with mountain views, is on the second floor.
Strawberry Hill’s Hudson Valley (southern Columbia County) location is convenient to travel arteries and public transportation. Close to: NYS Thruway at Kingston and Catskill, Taconic Parkway, Amtrak at Rhinecliff and Hudson, and Metro North at Poughkeepsie. Also near NY, MA and VT ski areas. Hudson, to the north, is an established antique center. Nearby is the home of Frederic Church of the Hudson River School of American landscape painting. Taghkanic State Park, adjacent to Taconic Parkway, has fishing, boating, swimming, and hiking. To the south, in Dutchess County, are old Hudson River estates. From the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park; Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck; to the numerous new and exciting restaurants in Red Hook, Tivoli, and Hudson; and Otto’s Market in Germantown with outside seating in the warmer months, there are restaurants for everyone.
